Sleep Study Costs

A sleep study undertaken in a public hospital in Australia is covered by Medicare, with the only additional cost being the visits to the sleep specialist.

The patient will also be liable for the cost of the first visit to a sleep specialist, $165 to $300, a second visit to the sleep specialist for the results, about $115, a third visit, about $165 to the sleep specialist for the pressure settings results. If the sleep study is not undertaken in a public hospital, there may be additional charges of about $400 for the first night, and about $300 for the second night.

A private sleep study clinic will claim the cost of the bed and some of the tests from Medicare, and will make extra charges for the accommodation.

A patient who attends a private sleep clinic can expect to pay over $1,200, (partially refunded by their health fund in Australia),while Medicare will have paid a similar amount to the clinic for the overnight stays.
